Introduction

It’s 2025 and it’s absolutely not cool to capture, save, and upload assets to Jira tickets separately. Each bug, each step, each attachment becomes a tedious task of downloading files, ensuring the right formats, meeting size limits, and finally, uploading them—hoping nothing breaks along the way.

It’s a tiresome, repetitive cycle that turns SDLC into a marathon of file management rather than building software. And when you’re trying to centralize all the relevant information, the process only gets more chaotic: searching for links, organizing attachments, and tracking down missing context in a sea of files.

How BetterBugs Can Help

You can simplify video documentation, avoid file compatibility issues, and save time by creating a cohesive, detailed bug report with video context ready for any team member to view and address. With BetterBugs, you can capture full or cropped screenshots, annotate, and share bugs—including video files—in a more streamlined way. Here’s how BetterBugs can make the process easier:

  • Effortless Video Capture: BetterBugs allows you to record screens directly within the Chrome extension, so you won’t need to manually capture, edit, and attach MP4 files.
  • Link Sharing Instead of File Uploading: BetterBugs can generate links to recorded sessions, making it easy to add a link to your Jira ticket. This helps bypass size or format restrictions, as the video is hosted externally.

Note: You can even attach spreadsheets—or any type of file—to your BetterBugs bug report.

  • Annotations and Markups: BetterBugs also supports markups, comments, and priority settings, which can clarify the bug report, so you can reduce back-and-forth communication on Jira.

What are Jira Attachments?

Jira attachments let you centralize documents, visuals, logs, and other files within issues.

You can add:

  • Images: Screenshots and annotated images (jpg, jpeg, png)
  • Documents: PDFs, Word documents, and other text-based files (txt, doc, docx, pdf)
  • Videos: Screen recordings and other video files (mp4, mov, avi)
  • Spreadsheets: Excel files and other tabular data (xls, xlsx, xml)
  • Other Files: Any file type that provides relevant information to the issue (gif and others)

Working with File Attachments for Jira Issues

Here are some practical workflows for working with attachments in Jira:

Step 1: How to Add Files to Jira Tickets

Attaching files to Jira issues is straightforward. Here’s how:

  1. Go to your Jira project.
  2. Click open a task. You can also open other issues, such as a story or a bug.
  3. Click the “+ Add” button from the top left corner of the task window.
  4. From the dropdown, select “Attachment”.

There you are. You’ve successfully attached file(s) to the Jira ticket.

To download all the attachments,

  1. Click on the three dots at the top right corner.
  2. Select “Download all” to get the attachments in a zip file.

Alternatively, you can add files to Jira issues by simply dragging and dropping items. Here’s how:

  1. Open a task to which you want to add files.
  2. Drag and drop the file(s) from your device to the task window.

NOTE: Jira allows up to 2000 attachments per issue. Attachments are typically displayed in a row with previews for each file. When the number of attachments exceeds 150, they are displayed as a list by default. Also, file names cannot contain special characters such as “%”, “$”, “\”, “/”, and others.

Step 2: How to Add Video Files as Attachments

Jira supports various file formats, including images, documents, spreadsheets, and video files such as MP4, AVI, and MOV. However, be mindful of the size and format restrictions.

Also, the maximum size for uploading files in Jira can vary depending on the configuration set by the Jira admin. In a free tier Jira account, the default limit for attachments is set to 1024 MB which can be increased to 2048 MB.

To attach a video in Jira,

  1. Follow the same steps from “Step 1: How to add Files to Jira Tickets” as above.
  2. Ensure the video file is within the acceptable size limit and format.

Step 2: How to Edit File Attachment Settings

To access and edit file attachment settings in Jira,

  1. Click the Settings cogwheel icon “” from the top right corner.
  2. Select Jira settings > System from the settings dropdown.

How to Edit File Attachment Settings

  1. Select Advanced > Attachments from the left-hand column menu. This opens the System Attachments page. Here, you’ll see the default Attachment Size set to 1024.00 MB and Enable ZIP support as ON.
  2. To change default settings, click the “🖊 Edit Settings” button from the top right.

Edit Setting

  1. Specify the Attachment Size upload limit in Bytes. The max limit per file is 2048 MB. (For Paid Plans, it's 250GB or above.)
  2. You can also disable the ZIP support. By default, it’s enabled, which allows you to download attachments as a zip file from the Jira ticket.
  3. Once you’ve made the changes, click the “Update” button to save.

Once you’ve made the changes, click the “Update” button to save.

You’re good to go.

Step 3: How to Configure File Attachment Permissions

Sometimes, you may have to customize attachment settings for projects. You can update the project permissions from the Permission schemes option. Also, you require system admin or Jira admin-level permissions to make any changes.

By default, file attachments are set as per the Default Permission Scheme with the following permissions:

  • Create Attachments: Allows users to attach files to issue(s).
  • Delete All Attachments: Allows users to delete all attachments for issue(s).
  • Delete Own Attachments: Allows users to delete their own attachments for issue(s).

To configure file attachment permissions in Jira:

  1. Click “” for Settings from the top right of your project screen.
  2. Select Jira settings > Issues from the dropdown.

How to Configure File Attachment Permissions

  1. From the left navigation pane, select Issue attributes > Permission schemes.

How to Configure File Attachment Permissions

  1. From the Issue Permissions schemes page, click “Default Permission Scheme”. This opens the page with all the permission schemes.

  1. Scroll down to Attachments Permissions. From here, you can configure permissions for:
  • Create Attachments
  • Delete All Attachments
  • Delete Own Attachments

Attachments Permissions

Let’s work with the “Create Attachment” option here. Same way, you can configure permissions for the other two.

To Add Users, Groups, or Roles, do the following after step 5 from above:

  1. From the Create Attachments row, click “Update” available under the Grant To column.

To Remove Users, Groups, or Roles, do the following after step 5 from above:

  1. In the Create Attachments row, click “Remove” below the Grant To column.
  2. From the dialog box list, select the users (or roles, groups) who will no longer be allowed to create attachments.
  3. Click Remove.

That’s how you configure file attachment settings in Jira.

How to Fix Common Issues with Video Attachments

Below are common issues you may come across when attaching video files, such as MP4 or other large-sized files to Jira tickets. We’ve also included solutions for each.

Problem 1: Attaching an MP4 repeatedly fails

If attaching an MP4 fails repeatedly, it might be due to file size limits, unsupported formats, or network issues.

Problem 2: Unable to play the attached MP4 video

Sometimes, attached MP4 videos may not play within Jira due to browser cache issues, unsupported file formats, or corrupted files. You can use BetterBugs to clear the cache with one click. To do so,

  1. Download BetterBugs and pin the extension to your browser.
  2. Open it and click the cookies icon 🍪 to instantly clear out cookies & cache browser data.

Problem 3: Cannot attach or paste videos to JIRA tickets anymore

Changes in browser settings, Jira updates, or plugin conflicts might prevent you from attaching or pasting videos to Jira tickets.

Problem 4: MP4 does not preview in Jira Tickets

Try using a different browser, re-encoding the video, updating your Jira instance, or clearing the browser cache to resolve the issue.

  • Check your permissions to ensure you have the right to add attachments
  • Verify that the file size is within the allowed limit
  • Ensure that the file format is supported
  • Try switching browsers to rule out compatibility issues
  • Update your browser or Jira plugins to the latest versions
  • Try clearing your browser cache

FAQs

Yes, you can import attachments into Jira. To do this, include the attachment URL in an Attachments column within your CSV file (source file for the import). Jira will automatically pick up the attachment URL from the CSV file. Ensure that the URLs for attachments use HTTP or HTTPS protocols and are accessible by your Jira Cloud site. Also, make sure your attachments are correctly referenced in the CSV files and stored in the appropriate directory for Jira access.
